BAZZLE 812-320-5585 Scope an Appraisal
For CFOs & Finance Teams

Your equipment portfolio lives in Excel. The lender's appraiser doesn't.

Your equipment lives on a spreadsheet because no one built the right tool for a $50M–$300M portfolio. BAZZLE did — MCMEA-credentialed documentation that holds up when the financing call comes, the loss occurs, or the auditor asks.

The CFO who walked into a refinancing call with a 2022 schedule and a lender's appraiser at $4.1M when the schedule said $6.8M didn't have a documentation problem. He had a process problem. No one had built a system to keep the number current between transactions. BAZZLE is that system.
Where the exposure lives

The documentation gaps that create real problems.

  • Stale collateral schedules

Equipment-secured borrowing bases built on outdated appraisals put you at the lender's number, not yours. A current Equipment Appraisal on your operation changes that conversation before it starts.

  • Insurance gaps at renewal

Replacement cost coverage written against 2022 values on equipment that has appreciated or whose useful life has changed leaves a gap the carrier won't close after a loss. The shortfall lands on your balance sheet.

  • Depreciation blind spots

Heavy equipment doesn't depreciate linearly. The inflection point — where book value diverges sharply from actual replacement cost or salvage value — happens at predictable hour thresholds. Continuous Asset Monitoring flags them before they become surprises.

  • Audit and examiner exposure

Examiners reviewing equipment-secured loan portfolios ask for current, credentialed appraisals. "We haven't had one in three years" is not an answer that ends the review favorably.

In practice

Where a defensible number changed the outcome.

Surface Coal Mining

$250M in equipment · 5 sites · WY, KY, IN, WV

An above-ground coal operation needed a defensible appraisal to refinance its equipment across five sites in four states — delivered in two weeks. The work validated field upgrades and maintenance the books had never captured, surfaced duplicate asset numbers in the existing records, and established a value higher than the CFO's book number, because the iron was worth more than the schedule showed.

Oil & Gas

$50M in equipment · 3 states · WY, ND, SD

A fractional CFO needed a true asset list and defensible values ahead of a sale, spanning three states. We built the operation its first accurate equipment list from the ground up and set market values that satisfied seller due diligence.

Common questions

Equipment appraisal for CFOs — straight answers.

  • Why does a CFO need a certified equipment appraisal?

Because the equipment on your balance sheet is usually carried at a number nobody verified, and the moment a financing call, an insurance loss, or an audit arrives, someone else sets the value for you. A credentialed appraisal establishes a defensible baseline you control, before you need it.

  • What's wrong with carrying equipment at book value?

Book value reflects tax and accounting depreciation, not market value — the two have no reliable relationship. Lenders, insurers, buyers, and courts don't accept book value as evidence of what the equipment is worth, so it can't defend a number when it matters.

  • How does an appraisal help in a refinancing or credit facility?

It puts your own current, credentialed number on the table so the lender's appraiser doesn't set the collateral value by default. That turns the conversation from a dictation into a negotiation — and on an equipment-heavy balance sheet, the difference is measured in borrowing capacity.

  • What does a certified equipment appraisal cost?

Most certified engagements run $3,500 to $25,000, with complex, multi-site, or litigation work reaching $40,000 or more. There's no rate card because scope varies; every engagement is scoped before a number is quoted.

  • How current does the equipment number need to stay?

As a working rule, appraisals older than about 18 months trigger flags in a regulatory examination. Keeping the number current is what keeps you from walking into a financing call or an audit at a value you can't defend.

  • Who signs the appraisal, and why does that matter?

An MCMEA-credentialed appraiser — one of 26 in the United States. When a counterparty challenges the number, the credential behind the signature is what determines whether it holds. Software can prepare research, but the certified opinion of value is a human MCMEA determination.
